The $1 million a year would not go toward the new ballpark, slated to open next month. Instead, the money would go toward an adjacent plaza, restaurants and nightclubs -- all things promised by SK Baseball when the ballpark was pitched to city leaders.
The issue isn't whether SK Baseball wants to go ahead with the area redevelopment -- it does -- but rather how the work is financed. The credit markets apparently have looked unfavorably on the SK Baseball plan; hence the request for city financing. In exchange, SK Baseball will agree not to move the team from Reno for 15 years, up from the current 10-year commitment.
