Omaha: Your center of the baseball universe come April

New Sarpy County ballpark

It’s a tale of two ballparks in Omaha, where two new facilities — TD Ameritrade Field and a new Sarpy County ballpark for the Omaha Royals (Class AAA; Pacific Coast League) — are slated to open next April. Here’s a report on the construction progress for each.

In general, both are on schedule for an opening next spring; the sod is already laid at the O-Royals facility, and everyone expects things to be ready for an April season opener. Meeting a construction schedule is so boring, apparently.

Meanwhile, at the downtown ballpark slated to host the College World Series, the construction schedule has slipped, though not to the point where anyone expects the CWS to be impacted. (Apparently Creighton University has been warned there’s a chance some early-season games could be impacted, with the actual ballpark opening coming in May.) Still, the ballpark construction season anticipated an opening months before the CWS, so any slippage can be accomodated.
