The origins of the game of baseball are murky, at best; every few years someone comes up with a reference to the game of baseball well in advance of the supposed invention by Gen. Abner Doubleday. (Most recently: Historian John Thorn uncovered a reference to baseball in a 1791 Pittsfield, Mass. city document.) That, along with evidence that the person crediting Doubleday for the invention of baseball was certifiably nuts, pretty much scotches the whole Doubleday myth.
