Pensacola to launch name-the-team contest

Southern LeagueOf course. The new Pensacola team in the Class AA Southern League — the relocating Carolina Mudcats — is launching a name-the-team contest in anticipation of a 2012 opener.

The same owner, Quint Studer, owned the Pensacola Pelicans (independent; American Association), but the team won’t keep the Pelicans moniker, obviously. The organization is teaming up with the local newspaper, the Pensacola News Journal, for online name submissions. Team name entries can also be mailed on a 3×5 index card to the Pensacola News Journal, Attn: Name Our Team, 101 E. Romana St., Pensacola, FL 32502. Deadline for entries is Thursday, April 14 at 5 p.m.

“We are extremely excited to see what names our fans can come up with during this contest,” said Bruce Baldwin, Pensacola Baseball President. “We feel this is a chance for the community to be creative and give the team a name that the community can be proud of for years to come.”

The top six finalists will be chosen by Pensacola Professional Baseball and announced on Friday, April 22. The community will then get to vote for its favorite name until May 6. The winning name will be announced May 18.
