Silver Hawks sold

South Bend Silver HawksThe South Bend Silver Hawks (Low Class A; Midwest League) have been sold to a Chicago businessman by an investment group led by former mayor Joe Kernan.

Kernan and crew put up the good fight in keeping baseball alive in South Bend, operating the team at a loss while working with the city on a $8-million renovation of Covaleski Stadium. Baseball is a hard sell in a town where the University of Notre Dame consumes so much of the available oxygen, especially when discussion of the upcoming football season pretty much begins when the prior season ends.

The team was purchased by Andrew Berlin, owner of Berlin Packaging. Terms of the transaction were not released. It must still be approved by the Midwest League, MiLB and MLB.
