It was bound to happen, especially with the team floundering in the standings: the Philadelphia Phillies’ record-breaking streak of 257 sellouts at Citizens Bank Park ended last night.
The sellout streak began on July 7, 2009 when the team played the Cincinnati Reds. Total paid attendance for those 257 games was 11,585,952 with an average attendance of 45,082 per game. The Phillies home record at Citizens Bank Park during this time was 154-103.
“The number of sellouts could not have been possible without the tremendous loyalty of our fans who continue to lead all of Major League Baseball in average attendance this year,” said Phillies President David Montgomery.
The Phillies’ consecutive sellout streak was the longest ever in the National League and the third-longest in Major League Baseball history; a pretty amazing run given the economy. The Boston Red Sox and Cleveland Indians hold the two highest records in MLB; the Red Sox have a current streak of 772 sellouts while the Indians experienced 455 sellouts from 1995-2001.
