2014 Summer Collegiate Attendance by League

Ballpark DigestWe conclude our coverage of summer-collegiate attendance with listings by league, as virtually every summer-collegiate league recorded an increased attendance for 2014 when compared to 2013.

This list represents some history: the Northwoods League is the first summer-collegiate league to attract more than a million fans in a season. Part of that is a function of the longer season — 36 home games — and part of that reflects two very successful new teams in Kalamazoo and Kenosha, but it also reflects the league’s emphasis on and expertise with business as well as player development.

When you break it down by league, the increases are impressive. The Futures Collegiate Baseball League recorded a 19 percent year-to-year increase, led by the Pittsfield Suns and the addition of the Worcester Bravehearts. The Canadian Western Major Baseball League recorded an impressive 17 percent hike. The Prospect League notched an 11 percent increase. And the New England Collegiate Baseball League enjoyed a five percent hike, led by the Newport Gulls and the Holyoke Blue Sox.

This doesn’t cover every summer-collegiate team: there are a few leagues that choose not to report the attendance numbers publicly, and there are some teams that don’t seriously track attendance numbers. That’s OK: in those cases we’re talking about good-quality community entertainment. Still, this listing should give you a good idea of the growth in the summer-collegiate industry.
