Ballpark Short: Robert and
Mariam Hayes Stadium / Charlotte 49ers
Looking forward to a
first full season at the new Robert and Mariam
Hayes Stadium, the Charlotte 49ers are off to a
quick 7-1 start in 2008. We visited the
well-appointed new ballpark on opening weekend as
the 49ers hosted, and swept, Manhatten in a
three-game series.
A year ago, the University of North Carolina
Charlotte managed to host 16 actual home games in
the latter half of the season, but the stadium was
nowhere near finished. The 49ers had to make due
with a single phone line (for home radio) and a
temporary speaker system. Despite a nomadic
existence for much of 2007, the 49ers won the
conference tourney and claimed their first-ever
NCAA tournament victory.
The completed facility
has all the necessities and many niceties, as
well. Total capacity is generously estimated at
3,000, including 550 backed seats and 550 bench
seats. Your food choices and quality are at least
a notch or two above the typical Division I
ballpark fare thanks to the on-site kitchen with a
big gas grill.
The grandstand
includes a large media room, radio booths for home
and away, a TV booth, a large suite with patio on
the first base side, and a smaller enclosed suite.
The larger suite was dedicated last October in
memory of former Charlotte pitcher Erik Walker,
who died in a 2006 boating accident. (We will be
posting a full ball parkreview here in the next
few weeks.)
With drought
conditions throughout the region triggering
watering restrictions, the year-old field had its
fair share of winter brown patches. With a little
more moisture, though, the field is expected to
green up and smooth out nicely. Unfortunately, the
rains came poorly timed as the 2008 debut of the
completed ballpark was washed out on Feb. 22. The
weather was wonderful, though, for the
doubleheader the next day. --Jim Robins
