The University of Vermont is dropping men's baseball as a varsity sport, but school officials say Centennial Field will remain open -- for now.
Centennial Field is also home to the Vermont Lake Monsters (short season; NY-Penn League). MiLB reportedly has had issues with the condition of the facility in the past. And while Centennial Field is a fairly busy facility, hosting a slew of high-school games in addition to college matches, we just have to wonder if the University of Vermont will ever put any money into the facility for it to meet standards -- or whether Lake Monsters owner Ray Pecor Jr. would bother to do so on his own. So let's just say we're a little skeptical about the future of pro baseball in Vermont. There are already rumors the university is looking at tearing down the ballpark in favor of more student housing or just shutting it down -- rumors that the university is denying for now. |
