04/14/2009 5:35 AM - The New York Mets opened Shea Stadium with a loss in 1964.

The streak continues, as the Mets opened Citi Field last night with a slim, albeit entertaining, loss to the San Diego Padres. Highlight reels will show many things: Jody Gerut's home run as the first batter in the ballpark, something we're told is the first such happening in the history of major-league baseball. John Pelfrey falling off the mound, laughing afterwards. And a balk forcing in the winning run in the 6-5 loss.

The New York papers were all over it, so we'd suggest you go to the Daily News, Post or Times and read through their voluminous coverage. We'd also suggest you read Harvey Araton's nice piece on the ballpark opening.
